I have always dreamed of owning a Porsche 930
Feature car of the month - January 2004

 |
| I have always dreamed of
owning a Porsche 930. It all started back in the mid-60 as a young man
growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area and seeing an abundance of
Porsches around the city. Alas, all I can afford from my meager full time
work (while going to college at that) was a '67 VW. Nonetheless, it was
air-cooled and if I close my eyes (while idling, of course), it almost
sounds like a Porsche.
Back from recruit training on furlough, I spotted my
first Porsche 930 in the financial district. I was smitten but by then I
had sold the old VW Beetle in favor of a newer car that would take me to
my first duty station across the US.
|
| Fast forward a few more
years later. A wife and two children, then the promotions through the
non-commissioned status (more pay), I bought my first Porsche. A 1973
911T. It was a Sepia Brown exterior with Brown leatherette (vinyl)
interior.
Some years later, the next Porsche to come into my
life was a 1986 Guards Red/Black leather interior 944 Turbo.
We had just bought a 1985 Audi 5000 CS from
then-Alan Johnson Porsche-Audi off Rosecrans Street in San Diego a year
earlier. Having had the 911T for some years, then the purchase of the
Audi, I got to know some of the staff at the dealership (always frequented
their lot to drool over the newest, best Porsche models).

Turned out that Alan Johnson had one of the first
944 Turbo to be delivered to the West Coast. Alan had modified the 944
Turbo for SCCA competition but never really had the time to
"play" with it. His brand new 1987 930S had just arrived and he
had lost interest over the 944 Turbo. Long story short, I made a deal for
it and drove it home the same day.
Third on this odyssey was my purchase of 1987
Black/black 911 Carrera coupe. Factory front spoiler with factory tail.
G50 was great but I still was hunting for the ultimate 911 I had so long
wished for.

That day came almost four years ago.
I was told of an unmolested (all original) 1979 930.
It was an acquisition from a Porsche collector by a PCA member out in
Pennsylvania (the 930 resided in PA since new up until my purchase). The
PCA member had it in a number of concours d'elegances and even making it
their region's newsletter front cover.

After some negotiations and the deal
ready to finalize, I sold the Carrera to make room for the 930 to my
wife's chagrin. She still to this date could not understand why I went
backwards with my acquisition plan. Selling a pristine 1987 911 for a 1979
model 930. But remember, the end play all along was to own a 930. I just
had to "work" my way up to it.
Now some really neat storytelling about my pride and
joy.
After some painstaking research, I have found the
following interesting story about my 930.
It was built in November 1979. Arrived the US in
February 1980. Delivered by Holbert Porsche-Audi to its original owner in
July 1980.
Documented as one of the last five US specifications
930 to export to the United States.
At the time of US 930 production end,
the late Al Holbert had the "right stuff" with the factory and
was able to get the last of the 930 production cars for his dealership. Al
kept the very last one of these cars for his personal use.
The original owner had a silver 930 he droved as a
"daily" driver. He kept this one in his collection and only
drove it good days. Hence, the low mileage (22K at time of my purchase)
but not too low that I will not be able to drive it. My intention was
always to drive whichever Porsche I bought. After all, isn't that what
makes these cars so wonderful to own?
Since my acquisition of the 930, I have had the
following (chronological) drivability modification done. I still have all
the original parts that were removed.
|
 |
 |
- Swap the dreaded thermal reactors for OE euro
exhaust system.
- Al's brother and Crew Chief, Holbert Racing, Mike
Holbert modified all five 930's with what probably was the first twin
exhaust mufflers by cutting off a tail pipe from brand new OE muffler and
welding (opening) it the other side. At the prices these last 930 went for
in 1980, that's a bargain! I still have that original twin tail pipe
muffler but replaced it with a stainless steel, Aase Brothers twin-tail
pipe.
- Started stockpiling upgrade parts including Stephen Kaspar's old
custom-made fan driven oil cooler (from "Monster" before the
slant nose conversion) and an OE oil-feed chain tensioner. Finally after
getting all the parts ready, I took my 930 to Wicky Lawrie in Nashville,
TN. Wicky started his Porsche career with Brumos in 1980 and now has his
own shop in Music City. The plan was install the updates I've saved up for
the past couple of years. Well, all best laid plans…..
- One of the
Divalar cylinder head stud was discovered sheared off but thank goodness
it did not cause any damage to the engine. A few months later:
Raceware
head studs.
K27 7200 turbocharger.
Kaspar's fan-driven, fender mount
oil cooler.
Elgin's SC regrind camshafts.
Evo Air Induction System
Kinesis Super Cups and 315's rear tires
- Other cosmetics are:
AJ USA
930S steering wheel
Crested door paddles
Crested wheel center caps
AGLA leather 959-style shift boot & knob
AGLA leather e-brake
cover

| One thing for sure. I bought my "dream"
930 to do one thing and only one thing….to drive and enjoy it. And I do! |
